The challenge: why SEO for a pelvic health clinic is different

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a small, specialised and sensitive niche. Generic “physio SEO” tactics do not work well here, for four reasons.

1. A narrow keyword market. Patients use a handful of specific terms. In this project, just two non-brand queries, “pelvic floor physio” (1,443 impressions) and “pelvic floor physio gold coast” (1,207 impressions), carried most of the commercial search demand. Ranking well for those few terms decides whether the clinic is found at all.

2. Health content is held to a higher standard. Google treats health topics as “Your Money or Your Life” content. Pages need clear clinical accuracy, a named qualified practitioner, and strong signals of experience, expertise, authority and trust (E-E-A-T).

3. Strict advertising rules in Australia. Physiotherapy is a regulated health service. Under the National Law and Ahpra’s advertising guidelines, clinics cannot use testimonials about clinical outcomes in their advertising (Australian Physiotherapy Association). A proposed 2026 reform would relax this ban, but it had not changed the rules for this project (King & Wood Mallesons). The site had to win on expertise and local relevance, not on review-heavy marketing.

4. Private, high-intent searches. People searching for pelvic floor care are often dealing with personal issues during pregnancy, after birth or later in life. They search quietly, often on mobile, compare only a few local clinics, and act fast once they trust one. Local visibility in Google Maps and a reassuring, professional website matter more than volume of content.

Strategy and execution

The strategy focused on owning the few searches that matter, proving clinical expertise, and dominating the local map results.

  1. Keyword and intent mapping. Each core query got one dedicated page: “pelvic floor physio”, “pelvic floor physio gold coast”, “pelvic physio gold coast”, “women’s health physio gold coast” and “boutique physio”. This avoided pages competing against each other.
  2. Local landing page optimisation. Service pages were optimised for Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise, with consistent clinic name, address and phone details matching the Google Business Profile.
  3. Practitioner E-E-A-T. Zara Howard’s name drove 128 search clicks on its own, so her profile was treated as a core asset: credentials, experience, a clear bio and Person schema linked to the clinic.
  4. Google Business Profile optimisation. Primary and secondary categories, services, photos, booking links and regular updates, so the profile shows for generic searches, not just the clinic’s name.
  5. AEO and GEO for AI search. Answer-first content, clear FAQs and structured data (MedicalBusiness / Physiotherapy and FAQ schema) so AI tools such as ChatGPT can understand and cite the clinic.
  6. Compliance-first content. Every page was written to stay within Ahpra advertising rules: no clinical testimonials, no outcome guarantees, accurate and evidence-based claims.
  7. Tracking and reporting. GA4 and Google Search Console were set up and monitored, including referral sources such as AI chatbots and link-in-bio traffic.

Google Search visibility

Over 12 months the site earned 1,680 clicks from 61,400 impressions, with a 2.7% click-through rate and an average position of 8.6. In the latest 3 months alone it earned 587 clicks from 38,900 impressions. Daily impressions grew from around 100 in early August 2026 to more than 1,000 by late October, a roughly 10x rise in visibility.

Top search queries (last 12 months)

Query Type Clicks Impressions CTR
boutique pelvic health Brand 304 612 49.7%
zara howard Practitioner 128 585 21.9%
pelvic floor physio gold coast Local, non-brand 55 1,207 4.6%
pelvic floor physio Non-brand 35 1,443 2.4%
boutique physio Partial brand 14 57 24.6%
pelvic physio gold coast Local, non-brand 11 92 12.0%
zara howard physio Practitioner 11 17 64.7%
womens health physio gold coast Local, non-brand 5 114 4.4%

The two highest-impression queries are both non-brand: “pelvic floor physio” and “pelvic floor physio gold coast” together earned 2,650 impressions. That shows the site now appears for the searches new patients actually make, not only for people who already know the clinic.

Google organic was the largest and most engaged source. ChatGPT already sends real visitors, a sign that the AEO/GEO work is getting the clinic cited in AI answers.

Local search (Google Business Profile)

From May to October 2026 the profile generated 33 phone calls. The searches that surfaced the profile were mostly generic, not brand:

Search on Google Views
pelvic floor physio 352
pelvic floor physio gold coast 113
boutique pelvic health, bundall road, surfers paradise qld 36
boutique pelvic health 21
pelvic floor physio near me 18

About 89% of the top five searches (483 of 540) were people looking for a pelvic floor physio in general, not the clinic by name. That is new-patient discovery driven by local SEO.

Key lessons for pelvic health and women’s health clinics

  • Win the few terms that matter. In a narrow niche, two or three non-brand keywords hold most of the demand. Give each one a strong, dedicated page.
  • Your practitioner is your brand. People search for the physio by name. A detailed, credentialed practitioner profile builds trust with patients and with Google.
  • Average position 8.6 is a launch pad, not the finish line. The biggest gain now is moving “pelvic floor physio” and “pelvic floor physio gold coast” from the bottom of page one into the top three, where click-through rates are far higher.
  • Local SEO drives new patients. Most Google Business Profile discovery came from generic searches, so the profile works as a new-patient channel, not just a directory listing.
  • Plan for AI search now. ChatGPT is already a referral source. Clear, answer-first, well-structured content gets cited by AI tools.
  • Compliance is part of the strategy. In Australia, health clinics must market within Ahpra rules. Expertise-led content is both the compliant approach and the one that ranks.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take for a physiotherapy clinic?

Most clinics see early movement in 3 to 6 months. In this case study, 63% of the year’s Google impressions came in the latest 3 months, which shows how visibility compounds once the foundations are in place.

What keywords should a pelvic floor physio target?

Start with the core service plus location, such as “pelvic floor physio [city]”, “women’s health physio [city]” and “pelvic floor physio near me”. In this project, “pelvic floor physio” and “pelvic floor physio gold coast” were the two highest-impression searches.

Can physiotherapists in Australia use patient testimonials in marketing?

Under the current Ahpra advertising guidelines, testimonials about the clinical aspects of a regulated health service are not allowed in advertising. Comments about non-clinical things, such as friendly staff or easy parking, can be used. A 2026 reform proposal may change this, so check the latest Ahpra guidance before using reviews.

Is Google Business Profile important for a physio clinic?

Yes. For Boutique Pelvic Health, the profile produced 33 phone calls in six months, and most of the searches that showed it were generic terms like “pelvic floor physio”.

How do you make a health website visible in ChatGPT and AI search?

Use answer-first content, clear FAQ sections, structured data and consistent business details across the web. Credentialed authors and accurate clinical information help AI tools trust and cite the site.
